KALESMA MYKONOS DESIGN DIARIES
CRAFTING TIMELESS ELEGANCE: VANGELIS BONIOS' VISION

Guiding the interior aesthetic of Kalesma Mykonos, Vangelis Bonios of Studio Bonarchi, embraces a refined and timeless style prioritizing comfort and functionality. With a meticulous attention to detail and a dedication to quality materials, Bonios’ designs speak to the soul of each project, creating spaces that resonate with beauty and sophistication.

For Bonios and Studio Bonarchi, Kalesma Mykonos represents more than a project; it’s an expression of authentic Greek soul and a celebration of contemporary design trends on a global scale.

It’s a testament to their passion for crafting spaces that transcend time, leaving an indelible mark on the world of interior design.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR APPROACH TO INTERIOR DESIGN?

Growing up, my fascination with interiors fueled a perpetual curiosity for new design trends.

While I draw inspiration from various sources, the Belgian school, particularly the works of designers like Vincent van Duysen and Axel Vervoort, holds a special significance for me.

HOW DO YOU TACKLE THE DESIGN PROCESS ACROSS A RANGE OF PROJECTS SUCH AS RESORTS, HOTELS, AND PRIVATE RESIDENCES?

Each project begins with thorough research, considering the locale’s history, existing architecture, local aesthetic, and surrounding landscape. These elements ultimately shape the project’s identity.

ARE THERE RECURRING ELEMENTS OR THEMES IN YOUR DESIGNS?

I often incorporate a dramatic interplay of light and dark elements, marrying materials ranging from airy linens to rugged stone volumes. Authentic materials reflecting nature’s beauty are integral to my designs.

BALANCING FUNCTIONALITY WITH AESTHETICS IS CRUCIAL IN DESIGN. HOW DO YOU APPROACH THIS BALANCE?

Functionality and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive. For instance, in projects like the Kalesma Mykonos suites, functional closets seamlessly integrate into a visually striking synthesis, captivating visitors while meeting practical needs.

SHARE A SIGNIFICANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE THAT INFLUENCED YOUR DESIGN APPROACH.

Designing a compact capsule hotel room in Aspen challenged us to create a functional space that resonated with the surrounding wilderness. This experience reinforced the importance of seamlessly connecting interiors with the natural environment.

What inspired the design of Kalesma Mykonos, and how does it reflect the island’s essence?

Inspired by the local culture and landscape, Kalesma Mykonos embodies a sense of familial warmth and community. Elements like the aloni and the island’s history guided our aesthetic choices, celebrating Mykonos’s unique character.

What standout features within Kalesma Mykonos are you proud of?

I take particular pride in the fireplace lounge, which combines simplicity with artistic refinement, celebrating local craftsmanship as an art form.

Did Greek culture and heritage influence the design narrative of Kalesma?

Absolutely. Traditional Aegean architecture, whitewashed volumes, curved built-in sofas, and outdoor ovens reflect the noble simplicity of Greek culture, embodying the essence of Kalesma Mykonos.

How do you envision guests experiencing the interior spaces of Kalesma?

Kalesma Mykonos is envisioned as a Mediterranean village, fostering a sense of belonging and warmth akin to returning to one’s roots. Guests are invited to immerse themselves in the familiar embrace of a place that feels like home.
