A Living Thread

AT KALESMA, THE REVIVAL OF TRADITION IS NOT SYMBOLIC — IT IS PRACTICED. IN DIALOGUE WITH TEXTILE ARTIST FAYE CHATZI, WHOSE PRACTICE ENGAGES WITH EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY, THE HOTEL BECOMES A SPACE WHERE ANCESTRAL CRAFT IS SUSTAINED, INTERPRETED, AND LIVED.
Faye’s process begins in the landscape itself. Each spring on the uninhabited island of Rheneia, she shears her own small flock of free-roaming sheep. The wool is washed in the sea, cleansed with natural soap, dried beneath the Aegean sun, and hand-spun using spindle and distaff — a rhythm unchanged for millennia. Within Kalesma’s grounds, silkworms are raised and nourished by the mulberry trees that grow across the estate. Through the Peace Silk method, fibre is gently collected only after the silkworm completes its life cycle, then spun and dyed using plant-based pigments. No electricity. No synthetic intervention. Only time, hand, and material.
Her work moves between art and slow fashion. Textiles, garments, and woven pieces created in her atelier adorn the spaces of Kalesma — quiet presences shaped by patience and research. Selected works are available to be carried home, allowing guests to take with them not simply an object, but a continuation of the story.
Recognized internationally for her contribution to heritage craft, Faye is part of the Michelangelo Foundation’s network of master artisans and has presented her work in major museums in Greece and abroad. Her practice bridges archaeology and contemporary expression — a living thread between past and present.
Her working atelier and Weaving Academy, hosted within Kalesma, invite guests to observe her at the loom as ancient techniques unfold in real time. Through immersive loom sessions, guests may also engage hands-on with the process, learning the rhythm of weaving and creating their own woven keepsake. What unfolds is not performance, but continuity — craft evolving through contemporary hands.
In supporting her practice, Kalesma ensures that tradition remains lived, not displayed.
